Hi and welcome to online percussion lessons from Obatala Percussion. All lessons are free, and nonverbal. The videoclips consist of Cuban rhythms, which are usuable within most contemporary styles such as pop, rock, jazz and fusion. Most videos will be with batá drums, congas and chekeré. This first example is the Cuban rhythm Pa'ca' played by one person.

This is th next exercise which consist of bass tones and open tones. Again you'll have to do each exercise for 15 minutes. Begin with your metronome at the speed of 90. After 5 minutes raise to 100, play for 5 minutes and then end with 5 minutes at the speed of 110. Doing this with each pattern you play for 45 minutes. After a week begin at the speed of 100 and end at 120. Next week begin at 11...
AG groove #7

Nice conga groove in 2-3 son clave. The groove only has one stroke on the tumba, but all in all 3 slap strokes. Notice the fingertip in your right hand on 4and in the first bar.
Excercise #2
This exercise has 3 variations. A, b and c. Each version has to be played for there times, each time for 5 minutes. This makes a total at 45 minutes. This makes your hands get stronger and your open tones sound equal no matter which hand you play. Begin with version A, at a comfortable speed i.e. 90 beat per minute, and raise this to 100 after 5 minutes. Now play the same version for 5 minutes ...
La Topa

This rhythm is an adaption of the rhythm called La Topa. It's played on three batá by one person, and is for the first orisha of the three warriors, Elegguá.
AG double groove
For inspiration. This solo groove consist of only open tones. Among those 4 double strokes. I like very often to play this at the end of my free form solos. At the slow part I've added a 2 - 3 son clave in order to show the direction.
Excercise #1

This exercise develops two things. Your floating hand, and your hands ability to play double strokes.

THANK YOU FOR THE KNOWLEDGE MY AMIGO BLESSINGS ..................................................................................................
Thank you very much for your possitive respons. I really appreciate it.
Saludos
@@amilsax ¿Qué formato deberías utilizar?
great feel. Gracias. very helpful. playing the Lets Dance song by David Bowie and the percussionist goes into a Mozambique pattern at end song.
Oh, thanks for sharing that info. I didn't know that. I'll have to check it out
Thank you for sharing. I always wanted to learn that!
You are always welcome 🙂
Buenísimos sus tutoriales. Gracias!
GRACIAS! :-)
👏👏👏👏😲🎊🎉👏
:-)
Me hace feliz.
Very Wonderful! Thankyou! A suggestion: Make the slow part longer and make the fast part wonderful so I can play along ....longer! Thanks!
I meant fast part Longer
@@brotherjohnbeall1230 thank you for your feed back. It is a very good idea to make longer track for playing along. The reason why my clips are so short is due to the fact that most people do not watch longer UA-cam videos. But I will considder your suggestion for the future.
Just like to start by saying that your channel is phenomenal. Thanks for all you share. Also, this pattern(with the 4th drum added) reminds me a lot of what the late, great Jorge “el nino” Alfonso played on “Ese Atrevimiento”. It’s not exactly the same, but, it’s the same general idea of playing the second low open tone on a lower drum than the first.
Thank you so very much for your comment and info on "El Nino". I really appreciate it. 🙂
Tienes instagram?
Top man
Very cool how you show both the 2-3 and the 3-2 clave at the same time with bell and block.
Thank you Gregory 🙂
Great playing, fantastic congero/singer and band.
Wow la topa
nice beat, gracias!
👍
Eso no está en el mapa
Ja ja ja 🤣
@@obatalamusic 🤣🤌
Es así tan altas, suenan como bata?
¿Espero que te gusten?
Hello what are these congas tuned too ? …. Is this 1 tumbadora and 2 congas or a quinto ?
Hello Aaron. It is two quintos and one conga. When playing 4 drums I add a tumba. The tuning is not specific. I just tune them by ear. Enjoy. Best regards from Allan
Thank you for this class of Cuban music
You are welcome Cesar
I learned this rhythm fro Edgardo Cambon over twenty years ago. Nice to see it up here. And thanks for slowing it down so everyone can learn it.
Thank you 😊
That's Palo

GREAT VIEWING FROM TOP AT SLOW SPEED. HELPS LEARNING. eECELLENT TEACHING STYLE.
When is the strike of the "CLAVE" with the strike of the Tumbao.
What size are those congas you are using? What is a nice-sounding brand you recommend?

Thank you for posting this and all your videos. Your presentations are all well paced, concise and straight to the point. The camera angle is great for seeing how the patterns move around the drums. A+ all around!!! Looking forward to working my way through your curriculum....
I like these exercises. I'll give them a try for sure
I'm glad that you can use it Ernesto. One thing you can do is to record the way you play them when you begin. Record the fastest speed you can. After daily practise, record the same thing again, and listen to the difference. It's amazing. Our brain, and ears will gradually get used to the improved sound day after day, so without the recording, it is sometimes as if we do not improve. But we do :-) Have fun
Classic rhythm...more than one way to do this!

who is/was youʻre great teacher? Inquiring minds wanna know.
I've had two great teachers. Octavio rodriguez Rivera, Cuba, and Martin Verdonk, Holland. besides being a great teacher, Octavio is also my Godfather.
How Are You..?CrazzzZZZzzzy Times.
Yeah Mario. It is the worst situation on Earth ever. How are you dealing with it all?
@@obatalamusic One day at a time..no choice...this is it for now we shall see what happens.. thank you for hooking me up with octavio... have you seen Yolanda play? she became A MONSTER PLAYING!! Stay Well..
Yolanda has really moved. When I was there 6 years ago, she did not even want to listen to the ancient music. She did not play drums at all, but classical piano. SUDDENLY :-) She is amazing.
@@obatalamusic yes when I 1st got there she did not play congas then she became a rumba monster.....
She started late, and that really puts a question mark with the ever lasting discussion in our world on when to begin to play. It proves that it all has to do with focus, motivation and a damn good teacher.
Great !!! Great Instruction !!! And Playing as Well...!!!!
Thank you so very much Mario. I really appreciate it.
La variation est vraiment cool !
Muito bom exercício 👏👏
Obrigado.
